Mark van der Wal

Mark van der Wal has a background in tropical ecology and wildlife biology from the University of Amsterdam and Wageningen. After having spend 14 years working on hands on conservation & research projects in Colombia, Eastern Indonesia, Cameroon and Honduras, he joined the IUCN National Committee of the Netherlands in 2004. At IUCN NL he had several coordinating positions and was directly involved with the coaching and mentoring of many local conservation initiatives around the globe, funded through the IUCN NL grant facilities. Since 2006 he conducted monitoring and back stopping missions to partner executed conservation projects in most countries in West, Central and East Africa. Mark van der Wal has extensive experience on the cutting edge of conservation and development and is an advocate of more local ownership over the conservation agendas. At IUCN NL he is currently specifically involved with Central and East Africa & Madagascar.
