On October 1st, board members Monja, Marieke and Kim attended the 14th Nature Day at Burgers’ Zoo in Arnhem. GlobeGuards organized an auction of nature experiences for international conservation. GlobeGuards is a partnership of several small conservation organizations, including the Leo Foundation. Each organization within the GlobeGuards offered various auction items to benefit their chosen cause.
This year, the Leo Foundation contributed backpacks from the brand Nic&Mic; these backpacks are made from upcycled ranger uniforms. The backpacks were auctioned 21 times. The money raised will benefit the Carnivore Conservation and Research Foundation. This foundation provides education to children from the Gir region in India. This region is home to the only lion population outside of Africa. By teaching children about biodiversity and the lions in this region, this lion population will hopefully be preserved in the future.
In addition, bids could be made on a “Safari in the City” with the Green brothers (known from the TV program “Vroege Vogels”). The proceeds from this auction item will go to the West African Conservation Network. This organization is committed to protecting the lion population in Nigeria. Recently, this organization has been able to train a large team of rangers who go out into the field. However, the rangers’ all-terrain vehicles are broken down or in urgent need of maintenance. This auction item contributes to this. The excursion by the Green brothers has been auctioned twice, raising a substantial amount for the West African Conservation Network.
Sadly, around the end of the auction, we received the news that conservationist and primatologist Jane Goodall had passed away. Jane Goodall inspired countless people worldwide who are committed to nature conservation and animal protection. We thank Jane Goodall for her dedication and hope to continue her good work as the Leo Foundation.
